How often does OSHA require overhead crane training?
A certification issued under this paragraph is valid for 5 years.
On average, training programs last 4-8 weeks, and exams can be completed quickly after. However, to become a full-time professional crane operator, employers typically look for 2-5 years of experience. You can get experience through an apprenticeship or on-the-job training.
Taking the crane operation certification test can be an overwhelming process. There is a lot to learn and remember during the exams – you must complete and pass each exam within one year of each other to receive certification.
All workers must receive correct training and follow safety procedures, but there is a number of people whose jobs are vital to crane operations and whose responsibilities and training affect the safety of everyone in the area. As a result, they need to be mindful of additional safety concerns.
It states: “There is no specific time period after which you need to provide refresher training or formal assessment. However, you may decide that automatic refresher training or a retest after a set period (for example 3-5 years) is the best way to make sure your employees remain competent.
Qualified Person
However, OSHA does not specifically address training or certification requirements for overhead crane operators.
Logging. 29 CFR 1910.266 (i) (7) (ii) – “The employer shall assure that each employee receives first-aid training at least every three years and receives CPR training at least annually.”
The CPCS Competent Operator card (Blue) is valid for five years.
However, wherever OSHA standards require that employee training be conducted "at least annually," OSHA interprets that to mean that employees must be provided re-training at least once every 12 months (i.e., within a time period not exceeding 365 days.)
Cranes that are used for "normal" or "heavy" service should have their periodic inspections conducted yearly. Only cranes in "severe service" are required to be inspected quarterly. A crane that hasn't been used for more than a month but less than six months requires all frequent inspections before being used.
